comment What is the best martial art for reducing back pain and stress while increasing my fitness?
1) It is almost always bad to promote any single martial art as an answer, because I could just as easily say "capoeira" which is also true, but in a different way 2) Tai Chi is most emphatically not a substitute for strength training, and won't substitute for yoga or even meditation for everyone (e.g., I frequently prefer vipassana). It covers some of the same territory and makes a great compliment, but that doesn't make it a good substitute.

comment Why Do Pressure Points Work Differently Against Different People?
Generally the ones that are targeted most frequently map to both, e.g., the one I linked to there is an acupuncture point, but it is also interconnected to a bunch of different nerve tissue. I also flat don't have it on one side.

comment Tanto Forms Reference
Thanks for the reference, I'll check it out. Unfortunately the vast majority of references I've found on knife fighting are really atrocious >_<

comment How do I coach her mindset to better suit karate competitions?
Actually, I'd argue that you as a coach is highly relevant if you are going to be the one helping her, as is your relationship. I can't help a friend the same way I can help a student, and I can't help a student the same way I can help a friend. How "open minded" your relationship is here is irrelevant. The communication just isn't the same, and conflation can prevent effectiveness in one context while encouraging it in another. If you want a very clear example of how this works, look up Dual Relationships in Psychology and Counseling.

comment What is misogi?
It would help some for answering if I knew a little more about the context you have heard it in with reference to Aikido. Misogi is more of a shinto concept.

There are a couple of variations of passai on youtube. Do any of them look familiar?

comment Adapting karate to stage combat
I'm not sure that we actually would, because while we know the martial arts principles, I find that what people think martial arts looks like… isn't what it actually looks like. Meanwhile, there are entire courses in stage combat that aren't reliant on a martial arts background. It's been touched on, but I'd suggest opening a meta topic specifically on the topicality of this question.
