+1 for mentioning the most obvious target: the ankles. I would just add that the muscles in your foot are just as important, especially the ones at the bottom of the foot that moves your big toe.

You learn to remain calm by gaining experience. It's the same principle that underpins any contact sport. Freaking out happens when you don't know what just hit you or what's going to happen next. Once you get used to the idea that a punch or kick to the face feels so-and-so, your brain spends less time analysing what just happened, leaving more processing time available for "Okay, how do we do that to the other guy?". This shouldn't be a revolutionary concept. Go ask a boxer how he was taught not to freak out about being hit in the face.

Feel free to substitute any reference to knocking out with "stab to death", "incapacitate", etc. as the mood strikes you. But let me remind you that between us three, I am the one who not only personally performed well in international events, but also trained students who did well in said events. One even took the world championship title in her division. That's because neither myself, nor my students were ever under any illusion as to the point of martial arts.

No it's not. If you want to dance, then take up dancing. If you want spirituality, join a church. If you want a good workout, try Tae-bo. If you want to learn how to fight, then take up a MARTIAL art. google.com/search?q=define%3Amartial

comment is Jun Chong TKD a legitimate TKD dojo for self defense?
Wrestling. It's not as glamorous as the others, but it's very effective in real-world situations.
