comment Are there good alternatives to wood for weapons?
@slugster Gotcha. Yeah, I'm not sure-I've seen CF take some crazy impact abuse, but it's so dependent on how it's laid up, the epoxy, etc. Even if it did work, way easier (and cheaper!) to use something like PP anyway.

@slugster That's why I said it would be too light and you'd want to use a core.

comment Will engraving a staff made of white waxwood compromise its integrity?
@Trevoke I'll survive either way ;) Accepting an answer means it was the best answer for you--and sometimes we don't know precisely what we're asking until we start exploring answers outside of our knowledge base. This happens on stackoverflow all the time. My personal view is that all the upvotes and accepts mean less than nudging someone in a direction they might not have gone otherwise :)

@Trevoke My latest set is just a cheap beginner's kit; any local hobby shop, chain or not, should have something for maybe $10-20 and have enough tip shapes to get you started. It worked great for me, anyway :)

comment Are Aikido movies on the internet helpful for beginners?
@Ashley Those are different arts, not different styles of the same art. Perhaps I could have been more clear. IMO mixing closely-related styles can cause issues. I'm a strong proponent of studying different arts; my current primary school teaches JKD, silat, kali/escrima, grappling, boxing, etc.

comment How can I speed up the recovery of a bruised leg?
I think icing first, which IMO is more for reducing blood flow hence swelling (which can cause additional damage), then heating later (24-48 hrs) is about the best you can do. The more it's used the more blood circulates--this could help healing, but also prolong bruising--depends. I try to keep things moving, though.

comment What time requirement and certification does one need to become a Krav Maga instructor?
@BillyTheWind Also, any given style is likely to have only one or possibly a few associations. They exist so there is a common, unified source of answers to questions like this. Otherwise anybody could go around calling themselves a teacher of style XYX. You may not like that this is how things have gone, but in general, it is. There are also plenty of unaffiliated schools (my gong fu school, for example) but a ranking or belt conferred by an unaffiliated school will carry little weight outside of that school.

@BillyTheWind Whether or not you think it makes sense doesn't matter to the associations: each determines how they confer rank and status. They may do it the same, they may do it different, but they're the ones who make the rules they follow, and they're the ones best equipped to explain those rules to you.

comment What time requirement and certification does one need to become a Krav Maga instructor?
@BillyTheWind It's the "governing body" of a KM school; essentially all KM schools are part of a KM association. (Many, many other martial arts schools are as well.) The association determines how one becomes an instructor that represents that association. Only each association can give you specifics on how to become an instructor for that association.

@BillyTheWind (a) No, country has little to do with it, ranking and instructorship has to do with the association. (b) There is only association-specific replies, and to get that, you should be talking to the association, because they're the ones that confer instructorship--this should be obvious. (c) That is the "general, objective" reply, because how to go about doing that depends on the association.

comment How long should it take to gain fighting proficiency in tai chi?
@DaveLiepmann (a) Equally poor, (b) not really--we're not able to answer those types of questions in a general way, if we're being honest. It depends on the student, the teacher, the school, the classes, the time, the focus, etc.

comment What time requirement and certification does one need to become a Krav Maga instructor?
@BillyTheWind I didn't downvote, but I imagine because (a) lack of specificity, (b) trivially answerable by talking to someone involved in whatever KM association you're asking about, and (c) ultimately it's obvious--"get good, get certified".

comment Self defense with one hand tied behind back?
There's an entire African-styled form called "shackled hands" that's essentially for applications while handcuffed. You could also distract an opponent by throwing your severed hand at them.

comment How long should it take to gain fighting proficiency in tai chi?
@DaveLiepmann I think it's more likely (a) an objection to the word "should", and (b) there's no reasonable way to answer the question because it depends on an arbitrary number of factors.

@Trevoke No struggle, just mechanics.

comment What does it mean to “uproot” someone in tai chi?
IMO "uprooting" doesn't mean just "lifting" (i.e., under CoG) it means breaking the connection to root; this can come from twisting, pushing to the triangle, etc. Your own phrase "controlling the CoG" hints at precisely that--it has more to do with control of CoG than getting under it.

@BillyTheWind israelikrav.com/…, see the "belt or ranking system" question. Other KM orgs may do things differently.

@BillyTheWind "Did I try to discredit you?" I'm not sure what you mean. I believe that people that ask questions like "Can I do X in Y time" have motivations outside of what I prefer to deal with. Learning an art shouldn't be about time compression. For example, if I ran a dojo and someone asked me a question like that, I'd answer truthfully, but suggest they might be happier somewhere else.

comment What is the application for tai chi's single whip?
@DaveLiepmann The right arm is what does the initial deflection and capture. The arm break, for example, requires def. right arm to still have the attacker's right arm immobilized, otherwise there can't be a break.

@DaveLiepmann I tried; I've never been particularly good at describing applications, though :)
