comment What are the advantages of using a vertical fist for punching?
John P, I was not, as you say, being snide and condescending to Matt Chan. I had in fact addressed the question of advantage and disadvantage of one punch over the other. I stated that either type of punch can be advantageous in any given situation, as long as you can execute it efficiently. You absolutely right John P, my sensei ALL taught me to ACT not RE-ACT! Sometimes a mind can become clogged with seemingly important trivia and one needs be step back and return to the void, so as to avoid penny anti name calling and cat a walling PEACE - Mad Merlin.

To Matt Chan, One of the greatest teaching aids, and most powerful memory implanting techniques in ANY area or subject matter, is the use of anecdote, analogy and metaphor. Of course you have the ultimate final say by way of deleting any and all answers that don't fit your pedantic little boxes. Please, open your mind to a modern world !!!! As my daughter Aletha often says (to people like you and Sarcasthion) DRINK SOME CONCRETE MATE!!! and HARDEN THE &%$**&@# UP !!!! Peace Mad Merlin

comment What are the advantages of using a vertical fist for punching?
"As the young Master BRUCE LEE often asked "Is it effective? Does it work?" "yes?" Well he didn't really care what it looked like" I thought was a concise answer to the fact that it really doesn't matter what sort of punch is used as long as it is effective. The advantages of one punch over the other then becomes redundant. Or don't you 'get it' when you read some thing that may too far out of your comfort zone.

Obviously the good answer is in there, you have but to 'see' rather than 'look'. As to the quality and format. It wasn't to you that I was speaking but to person who asks the question. Please, stop all this petty nit picking and pathetic power mongering. Either do the job properly. or get the hell out. Peace Mad Merlin

If, as you say, they are indeed taught as a single system, it actually validates my point that 'striking' and 'grappling' are indeed involved in MMA training. This statement also validates my comment, by way of answer to you, that The future comes soon where all 'ways' - 'schools' 'styles' and 'systems will blend once more into the one true way of the MARTIAL ARTS !!!! It seems great Btuman that the future is now. I too have always trained MMA - Karate - Balisong - Arnis de Mano - Mano y Mano - Ju Jitsu - Kenbo - Bo - Jo - Dulo - Tai Chi. These allowed me to be a 'complete' martial artist.

I have merely made comment on the mixing of different martial arts, to answer the OP's question, and the statements by way of answers from other contributors. To the great Btuman what is MMA if it does not involve 'striking art' and 'grappling art'?
