I'm a web developer, IT consultant, and programmer with a property management firm in Orange County, CA. I also teach and train in Bujinkan Ninpo Taijutsu.

A lot of my side-projects end up rolling into my work life, and feel that the experience I've gained with web development, Ruby, Qt, C/C++, Java, etc. may actually be of use to somebody.

I've recently joined the Martial Arts private beta, and will be answering questions on there with regularity.

Oh, and I really hate when people tell me, "No, it can't be done." You're wrong; It can, it should, it will, so shut up and watch me.

Nothing is true; everything is permissible.

comment Good sources on using sticks for grappling/locks?
It's a decent book, which does cover some rudimentary skills in stick fighting, but it (purposefully or not) leaves large gaps. It's more introductory. The size of the stick is irrelevant when it comes to locking – if you can do it with a hanbo, you can do it with a stick, a rope, a bo, a flashlight, a knife, a sword, a magazine, or a bundle of spaghetti. You just have to understand the characteristics of the weapon.

comment Why should I wear my gi with left side over right side?
The nara period was over 1000 years ago, and about 700-800 years before most arts of Japanese origin in which one would wear a gi were even codified.

Annie Abbot, aka "The Georgia Magnet", circa 1884, toured and performed hot on the heels of Lulu Hurst, the original "Georgia Wonder". It's a practiced feat of leverage and center of gravity, and has nothing to do with Chi/Qi.

@JPHellemons which is why there's four paragraphs explaining the origin of modern wafuku, the law affecting its wear at various points, and the customs of order in Japanese culture.

comment What is the name of the figure using flags performed by Adam in Mythbusters episode 209?
It's painful how inappropriate it would be to -1 this for using Rick Tew as a paragon for any answer. Anybody else remember Tew-ryu?

@JuannStrauss there is no evidence of that. Barring an example, are we to simply take your word on it?

It's not a matter of knowing, but rather curricula; your implication regarding Bujinkan is equally imprecise. That is, the logic is flawed. Regarding turning "its all the instructor" into an alternatively phrased question, that's better taken to meta it would seem.

@DaveLiepmann by that token, the tendencies of 99% of BJJ instruction are aimed toward winning competition; there is no thought for breaking the joint or bone and moving away, but rather submitting one opponent. This isn't self-defense, it's delusion. But for that 1% that teaches how to lift the hips and bring the arm to the side just a little... As for phrasing, I already proposed one way to rephrase to reopen. I only proposed the instructor comment as a corollary to your usual answer.

Hi, and welcome to the site. Your answer seems like it could be a little more detailed, perhaps with some references. For instance, hand gestures all have some origin; the western handshake may be traced back to warrior cultures, in fact showing up as a terminus for the initiation rights of the Mithraic Mysteries. Rituals all have meaning; sharing their history can better help us to understand from where our arts come.
