I'm a web developer, IT consultant, and programmer with a property management firm in Orange County, CA. I also teach and train in Bujinkan Ninpo Taijutsu.
A lot of my side-projects end up rolling into my work life, and feel that the experience I've gained with web development, Ruby, Qt, C/C++, Java, etc. may actually be of use to somebody.
I've recently joined the Martial Arts private beta, and will be answering questions on there with regularity.
Oh, and I really hate when people tell me, "No, it can't be done." You're wrong; It can, it should, it will, so shut up and watch me.
Nothing is true; everything is permissible.

Understanding the nature of a high ranking judoka? Very, very good answer. |

How easy or hard is it for a combat sport champion to defeat a much stronger man? These are really, really hard questions to answer - in any given fight, you're still talking about two human beings, and human beings make mistakes. One mistake could change everything. Would it be difficult? Yes, but any fight is. I just don't think this is answerable in its current form. |

Martial Arts Vs Self-Defense This incites debate. An argument could be made for or against, reasonably well on either side. You could actually argue there are no fundamental differences between "Martial Arts" and "Self Defense" (e.g. that self defense is not a fighting style, but an affirmative defense of the use of violent force). Wish I could help make a good answerable question because you might be onto something interesting here. |

Is “choondu marmam” in Kalari Payattu real? I would suggest that, like most myths, it is based in fact. Magic, religion, spiritualism... These are all primitive methods of explaining experiences we otherwise don't or didn't at one time understand. To this day, people seek to apply order or reason to coincidence due to the superstitious nature of the mind. We like patterns, and when we see or hope to see patterns, and incorrectly give previous action a causal meaning, we have magic. Perhaps we can look at these abilities similar to religions: a source of hope, true or not. |

Can Forms (Kata/Poomsae/etc.) or Techniques (Waza) be practiced on the ground? It was studying САМБО in the first place that made me consider it. I think improving martial skills is as much a mental exercise as a physical one. I'm all for the "quick" approach of filling your training gaps with specialized training, but going back and understanding how you're really not doing anything different is good too. |

Does ninjutsu qualify as a martial art? @Kent martialarts.stackexchange.com/a/197/25 It makes for interesting discussion, but I'm not as sure as I used to be. Some ryuha that talk about martial skills also are in some places regarded simply as brigands. I lack the evidence to make a definitive judgment. |

Designs for a Board Breaker / Board Holder? While this link may answer the question, it is better to include the essential parts of the answer here and provide the link for reference. Link-only answers can become invalid if the linked page changes. |

Designs for a Board Breaker / Board Holder? Something needs to be added here as to why this is a better solution than a DIY approach; otherwise, it's simply ignoring the question regarding a DIY tool plan in favor of "I like this better." DIY isn't just about making something cheaper (often times, creating your own solution costs more), but is often about the process, and a starting point for creating something better still. |

How long should it take to gain fighting proficiency in tai chi? Personally I love this question, and I really want to answer it... I just can't even begin to decide where to start. It's a bit like trying to tell someone how long it takes to learn to dance, only assuming (but with no actual idea) that they have legs. |

Did Karate really originate in the Okinawa region of Japan? Fascinating. Sounds like a lot of resources need updating. |

Training while exhausted Good; but was "training while exhausted" ever advised for new techniques in the martial arts? I've only ever heard this approach for a means of removing excess/waste movement from a well understood technique as a means of absorbing the principles. The criticism of crossfit is relevant for Fitness.SE, but is it non-sequiter for MA.SE? |

Did Karate really originate in the Okinawa region of Japan? Interestingly too, it was Funakoshi who also is first credited with writing Karate as 空手 ("empty hand"), from the previously common 唐手 ("China/Tang hand", denoting the connection to the Chinese origins). |

Short leg issue and wide-soled shoe Personal views of chiropractics aside, hip alignment could be a factor. Either way, a podiatrist may be able to prescribe a custom orthotic to help your rather unique situation. |

What is shen energy? Is there such a thing as a “shen state” and if so, how does it come about? Voted to reopen based on improved quality. Seems clear the asker doesn't understand the subject, but that's what we're here for; the actual subject is something related to TCM, and could be covered by this meta. Editing to remove the video game references. |

Is martial arts training 'inadequate' for the real world? Sam Harris is a bit of a doom-and-gloom author; a bit negative. Self defense training is about increasing your odds of survival; on a long enough timeline, survival rates all fall to 0. |

How should a novice train if unable to join a dojo yet? Moving doesn't necessarily mean you can't train in a dojo. Find an art you're interested in, then go and look at google maps for training in the last few locations. If you have time to run or exercise, you can find time to train. If you want to learn a martial art, study it; if you just want to get in shape, you can join a gym! |

Translation for “Those who are possessed by nothing possess everything.” Does anybody have the title of the book from which the translation was drawn? Japanese titles tend to be a little less concise... |

“Aikido is first and foremost BUDO” It's not something you can directly translate one way. Japanese is ideogrammatic - Literally it would be something like "Harmony Energy Way (Subject), said but wasn't original nature is warrior way was to be." A less literal way to translate is "It goes without saying The Way of Peace is essentially the way of the Warrior." |

how to fight with eyes I've tried to clean up the question a bit in its translation issues; I have no idea what is meant by "what are the eye techniques follow while fighting" (sorry). Anyone got any ideas? |

What is a “heavy jab”? I've heard of "heavy" to describe a jab ("XYZ has a heavy jab"), but never of a "heavy jab" ("This technique is the 'Heavy Jab'"). Perhaps a misunderstanding? |
