comment Should I speed up my breathing or slow down my tai chi?
Find a teacher. This is exactly the sort of thing that a good teacher will be able to tell you. As you can see from the few answers you've got, already you have widely varying responses. You can not learn solely from video or public forums like this one. These are complementary sources at best. Your primary source should come from an experienced teacher

Extra plus points for this: "But--sitting on the couch causes diabetes, heart disease, immobility, boredom, and a boring personality."

comment What are the functional differences between the five main T'ai Chi styles?
Generally speaking a verd good and well balanced answer. I specially like the disclaimer at the end. It all comes down to the particular teacher. I do like to point out though that, like my teacher often likes to say, there is no "martial taiji" or "health taiji" -- there is just one taijiquan and proper training of all disciplines of the art will gain you both martial and civil benefits...

I would also advise to develop your own defences against groin attacks like proper posture that does not open your groin so readily to the attack. However, it seems to me, that this is the type of thing your classmates might point out to you.

+1 for By depriving your partner of a diligent attempt to kick them in the head, you are stunting their growth as a martial artist.
