comment Why do taekwondoists bounce so much? (And how do we help them stop?)
BTW, we just had a third TKD person join our class and he isn't bouncy. It's probably got more to do with the person than the style.

comment Octagonal vs round shaped staff weapons
@Matt-Chan, that would be true if you are using a stick that is the right size, but typically you would be shaping things out of a board from a larger tree. This gives you much more control over the grain in the final weapon. The straighter the grain, the better.

comment Do martial arts instructors also seek fitness instruction certifications?
Nice answer. I agree completely with you, esp about the "more harm than good" part. I don't mind training technique, and even once had an instructor that said we should get fit in our own time and come to class ready to train technique. I've also seen some shocking warm up routines in schools, but this seems to be the exception rather than the rule.

comment How do you prepare for the stress of a real self-defense situation?
I agree completely about the fear thing. The fear of getting hurt will cause us to do stupid things out of proportion to the real threat. Learning that a hit doesn't hurt as much as we fear it will is a huge lesson. Just like practicing breakfalls and learning that falling down is no big deal. This is not to say that a hit (or fall) can't be dangerous. In the news today, where I live, is a story about a 17yo who died after being hit once outside a nightclub. It's dangerous. But fear is dangerous too.

Pool noodles. What a great idea :) I saw these being used as targets at an archery place recently too.

@JohnP I'm not sure what style they are. I'll ask next time I see them. I didn't realise there were different types of TKD, but I guess it makes sense. There's different styles of every other martial art ;) Thanks.

comment How can you practice wrist locks/grappling holds without a partner?
Nice one for the wrist stretches :) I joined in a few hapkido classes once and the instructor did exactly these exercises and stressed they were the same as the wrist locks. It's a lesson that has stuck with me and I've made those wrist stretches past of my routine warm up.

comment What martial arts cultural remedies are there to avoid and relieve soreness?
@Trevoke if it's so you can keep training now, I'd forget about "traditional" tecniques. A nurse I train with swears by pain killers, and anti-inflamatories :) You can even use the proactivley before training.

comment What martial arts cultural remedies are there to avoid and relieve soreness?
Fair enough Trevoke. But I think my answer still stands. As my old instructor used to say "the only way to get good at something is to do more of it". Which is to say: keep doing those stretches until it doesn't hurt anymore. I'm not saying this is the best way to train. I'm just saying it's the traditional martial arts (macho) way.

comment Will engraving a staff made of white waxwood compromise its integrity?
When I make my own weapons from wood, I don't don't treat them with anything, and have not had any trouble, although I did just lose my wooden knife after 10 years with it. But I don't think the wood worms took it ;) I recently bought a "white oak" bokken and when I did do some carving on it, discovered that the "white" was just a white lacqure painted over what looked like common American oak :(

I've never experienced wood worms in weapons. Perhaps this is something particular to where you live? Some insects might be more previlant in some areas than others. Given that this isn't a concern where I live (Australia), I prefer not to oil practice weapons.

It sounds like you are not wrapping them tight enough.

comment history of Jujitsu?
Good point. Seems I need to rethink my question a bit :) But I suspect the answer to "why isn't there a definative history?" is that each school tends to tell their own biased version. They are all true enough in their own right, but I've found that big picture objectivity is a rare thing.

I'll confess I didn't watch the video. I was just going from the pictures.
