I'm currently studying Tomiki Aikido under Dr. Yoji Kondo, although I started in Yoshinkan aikido under Helton-Sensei. I'm also studying Taiji under D. Gilmer at StillwaterTaichi I'm informally studying jo and bokken.

Ten Chin or Tein Chien or something else? I believe it is legitimate to call Aikikai mainstream, although my teacher (who learned in the Tomiki lineage) might quibble with that. The reason it is important is that since (to my memory) Aikikai relies less on tai sabaki (The Walk), I don't want to reference that as a source; it probably isn't part of your training experience. |

When doing Aikido practice why should the attacker adapt to the defender? Good answer - I want to comment on a potential misunderstanding re your comment "the attacker will often 'guide' or 'help'..." . This can be true - there is an analogy to shuhari - sempai may begin cooperatively to shape the student until they understand the gross body motions, then move to a neutral position to allow the student to more fully understand the imbalance, ultimately moving to kaeshi-waza and the student masters the technique. What you said was correct, but I want to avoid a false impression. |

Ten Chin or Tein Chien or something else? It would help to cite which lineage of aikido you practice. Tomiki, Aikikai, and Yoshinkan all have slightly different names for the same underlying concepts. |
