I'm currently studying Tomiki Aikido under Dr. Yoji Kondo, although I started in Yoshinkan aikido under Helton-Sensei. I'm also studying Taiji under D. Gilmer at StillwaterTaichi I'm informally studying jo and bokken.

How to select the right Aikido dojo I think that several of these overstate the case. In both of my dojo's it is common for senior students to explain to novices, and it is not a violation of etiquette. Also in adjult dojo's, I think the proportions will change. We're probably 75% black belt at the moment, and although I'd prefer to change that, I don't perceive it as a significant problem. I don't disagree with tacone - these are useful indicators - but I think that they overstate the severity. |

War is a continuation of policy/politics/diplomacy by other means Downvote on "should" and "proper". The question will generate some interesting discussion and has spurred some interesting thought, but I don't think it is possible to tell whether it has been "answered", and consequently I don't think the answer has any reference value. Furthermore I'm skeptical that it is possible to research an answer to this question, or that an answer from an "expert" would be empirically superior to one from a random person. Very interesting question, but not, IMHO, appropriate. |

How can a teacher recognize that a student has progressed from 'ha' to 'ri'? Although I've provided my best answer, I'm increasingly skeptical that this question has an answer. I think it provokes interesting discussion, but the question may involve too many abstractions and subjective elements to permit an objective, empirical answer. |

How can a teacher recognize that a student has progressed from 'ha' to 'ri'? Loosely, yes. I wouldn't use the term "particular drill". I suspect that the student's performance during sparring would reveal whether the student had progressed from limited improvisation to a deeper understanding of the fundamentals. |
