Blocking with a katana blade @Sardathrion: I'm not a metallurgist, but my understanding is that a hard metal will keep an edge, but a blade that is too hard becomes brittle. Adding the soft elements allows enough flexibility to remain intact yet keeps the blade sharp. It can absorb a hit, but that's not the intention. You might enjoy this video.
