comment Is there a preferred meat type selection for Muay Thai training diets?
Soy protein has phytoestrogen. Whey protein doesn't. And as long as you aren't relying on powders as a mainstay, but instead using as a supplement, they are fine. (And there is some debate whether it was the soy protein or the plastic it came in that is causing the increase in estrogen in men).

@Vass - What do you think hamburgers are made of? And there is nothing special about fish vs. other proteins. You want to keep weight down? Eat less.

comment To punch with keys or without?
This. I worked in an ER, and I've seen a few injuries where the webbing between the fingers was shredded, keys embedded in palms, etc. Also, in many countries assault is merely the threat, battery is the act of striking. It can be compounded as you say, by wielding anything that appears to be a weapon.

comment Is the highest judo belt really red?
Also, many (if not most) karate/tkd styled systems only have 9 dan grades, with the 9th dan being reserved for head of the art. 10th dan (if used) is more ceremonial than achievement based.

comment is Jun Chong TKD a legitimate TKD dojo for self defense?
@SteveWeigand - Long term contracts (12-24 months) are a common business tool, nothing more. It allows a business owner to plan and project income over an extended time. Any good contract should have an escape clause, for many reasons other than "Yeah, I got bored".

-1. This is highly subjective. There are many TKD schools that do not emphasize competition, and are heavier on the defense/application aspects.

Not sure where you worked, but a guy that trains at our studio is a corrections officer, and they are absolutely not allowed to do anything like that except as a complete last resort.

comment What techniques would be effective in Zero Graivty?
I don't know what kind of water polo y'all play, but it's not according to any rules I know. I've played, and while I've been grabbed (And in some pretty rough games) I've never been clinched with body shots.

Also voted to close. It's basically guesswork.

If you grab an ear and "wrench around" you are just as likely to move and drift as your opponent unless you are latched on to something else.

Also, pay attention to what your hands/arms are doing. The more you let them get away/flap in the breeze, the more you disperse your center of gravity and axis of rotation. Both of which will end up throwing your spins off.

comment What are the chances of breaking my nose if I take up a Judo class?
Yeah, I can believe that. Can't tell you how many times I've been kicked in the back or more sensitive areas when working with/teaching new or out of control sparrers.

Oh, I agree, but how many times did you or someone in your school have an injury or mishap that may have interrupted training for a few days that was never reported? Even controlled, in class sparring has its risks, and even more severe injuries in a school setting are never really reported anywhere. I don't think it's a huge difference, probably in the order of 3-4 more per 1000, so 10-12ish per 1000 for in school incidents.

Actually, I would figure injury rates to be higher at a local school than competitors at the national level, just vastly more under-reported. You'll get a lot more people with some training and very little control than you would a tournament where all the competitors are national level and have developed control.

comment What information should I consider when choosing a martial art to study?
@JonnyP - Excellent information. I would encourage you then to find a more traditional based school then. For example, many TKD schools (Such as WTF and ATA) are very heavy into the competition aspects and do not do as much internal emphasis (YMMV, every school is different).

Everyone is more accountable with a partner. But I have seen it time and time again in students and workout partners, unless you truly have an internal desire, external motivators eventually fail.
