comment What do I need to keep in mind when picking a martial art as a bouncer?
My concern with aikido is the amount of training time required to become proficient with it, otherwise, I'd consider it. Mind you, I disagree that it's all about controlling someone without harming them - it is also an art with very, very violent moves - they're just fairly gentle at the same time :-)

comment Did Karate really originate in the Okinawa region of Japan?
"Kung Fu" actually just means "hard work" (that is, it is the characters "Time" and "Effort"). Karate means "Empty hand" or "Chinese hand" -- so it's not quite the same thing at all. Anything into which you put time and effort represents Kung Fu. Someone who spends his entire life painstakingly creating matchstick models does kung fu, as @MattChan indicated. The correct chinese term is 'Chuan Fa': en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuan_fa

I'm looking for the purpose of the ankles. It's a joint, a part of the body, and it can be ignored, misused, or used. I'm not sure how to answer your question without rewriting the question I wrote.

comment What are good exercises for strengthening knees to hold stances better?
I just made it up, to be honest, but the more I think about it the more I want to play with it. Heck! I'm gonna make that a REAL question.

rewrote question to make it less opinion-prone, if that's possible at all

While what you wrote is absolutely true, it does not answer the question :)

comment Why do martial artists “shout” in the execution of a technique?
Quite a good point :)

Yeah but that's such a low-level answer... If the kiai is actually a "remember-to-breathe" training for your style, I argue your style is lacking a breathing training :-)

Oh man, I wish I had been to competitions where real skill was taken into account! Maybe it wouldn't have disgusted me.

I really want to pick this as the answer, but it only talks about one purpose at the moment.

Well, I did not want to rewrite what was in the Wiki article :-)
