I have been training for the last 20+ years in a Okinawan derived style called Bushin Ryu.

In that time I've also dabbled in some other arts and had the good fortune to train under some excellent people.

comment What is a good push-up routine to build punch strength?
Your strength could be fine and the issue could be related to technique. Have you had someone of sufficient senority watching you punch both in linework and on a bag/pad to pick up any technique issues?

comment Are there musical instruments which, when practiced, noticeably increase martial arts skills and performance?
I've seen many things suggested in martial arts movies, like helicopters being knocked out of the sky with back spinning hook kicks (well, I exagerate a little) and Chuck Norris wincing after receiving a yoko tobi geri (flying side kick) to the chest (which we know could never be true). While I'm being quite cynical, the orchestral background while JCVD was solo training in the temple grounds in Kickboxer did inspire me... Anyhow, I'm sure MythBusters would call "Busted" on this one.

Yes - electric guitars plugged into really big amps.

comment Why do martial artists “shout” in the execution of a technique?
Your ssshhh sound is still a form of kiai - it is normal for people to develop their own personalized kiai and for it to change depending on what they are doing.

Excellent answer IMO. I'd like to add a small elaboration: in traditional styles initially the kiai is taught to beginners to help promote ki flow, for the more advanced practitioner the different types of kiai are used to change the nature of ki flow.

comment Mouth guard / gum shields - tips?
@Swift, everyone has a different shaped mouth - you might be lucky to have a reasonably well formed teeth and gum line so you don't have too many problems with the boil & bites. Because the moulded ones are made to fit your specific teeth structure they are good for people with not-so-consistent teeth/gum structure. With mine I could jump round like a crazed monkey and it wouldn't move.

comment Mouth guard / gum shields - tips?
@stslavik, I paid the equivalent of approx US$50 for my moulded mouthguard (and dentistry is expensive in this country), and it is still serving me well a decade later. I'm not slagging the boil & bites, but after going through many of them with my kid who plays rugby I know the different brands have differing quality and the moulded ones are a good investment if you can afford it.
