I have been training for the last 20+ years in a Okinawan derived style called Bushin Ryu.

In that time I've also dabbled in some other arts and had the good fortune to train under some excellent people.

This is a little hard to answer definitively, even if we treat hard as synonymous with serious or very frequent. There can be a whole range of reasons why someone's muscles are tightening up - the way the question is worded most answers will be speculation, which is not a type of question that is encouraged.

While we can certainly sympathize with you regarding this, it is an extremely localized and subjective question which is not a good fit for the site. I would speculate that you are also missing detail from the question - people seldom attack without at least some sort of trigger event. In any case local law enforcement should be your first recourse. If you want you can edit and rephrase your question at which point we can consider reopening it.

You bring up a good point - just because someone is out cold it doesn't mean their eyes are shut and their body is limp.

Was the pain at the front or back of the leg, i.e. at the top of the quads or hamstrings? Or was it higer still, maybe at the bottom of your abdominals? Or in between? Which splits can you do - longitudinal ("American") or side ("Chinese")?

@Tzvi Hehe, if you walk around like that then people will indeed think you are "special" and the men in white coats won't be far away ;) But being serious, once you've trained long enough the "always be aware" concept will become more obvious to you - you don't have to be walking around in the "ready to spar" pose. For example I can walk down the street texting on my phone and still be totally aware - in fact the phone can be utilized as a weapon. You should be able to attack or defend from any angle and any pose/stance.
