@trevoke I think a question should have an answer that can be accepted that covers what you were seeking in the question and doesn't require an essay of many possibilities. If things / advice vary a lot from art to art then it may need narrowing.

the question seems way too broad to be able to answer. If your question was "whats the ankles role in a front kick" then maybe it would be easier. It also seems the question is biased in that you partly ask a question and then move into a discussion and answer already.

also been at a couple of different dojos that use similar but not quite the same rubber interlocking mats, also quite good. But then maybe I'm not that fussy :)

comment Do shock knives make a good 'training' alternative to real knives for knife fighting sparring?
slow training is good to a point, however, you really do need to train at speed because a LOT of technique breaks down under pressure.

for sure.....anything that's not a knife is only going to be a 'simulation' of real knife fighting, no matter how you train, it's not quite the real thing. Which is true of most all martial arts training.

yes, but you can't limit yourself just to chopping techniques to make it painful in training, as a real knife works in more ways than chops. Its not so much they give the illusion, the interesting thing about them is they demand more respect because there is greater consequence to being tagged by one.

comment Rule 1: Cardio. What exercises are worth doing to increase cardiovascular fitness?
one thing about your question, you do ask for several different things, requiring different answers.
