comment What information should I consider when choosing a martial art to study?
#4 is wrong I think, or at least its soft advice, and not necessarily true. I know this because I actually did this, I did an art because I liked the instructor, and he was great, but it wasn't really the martial art I wanted to do.

comment How effective are foul techniques as a side control escape?
you could blow in his ear, sing a nursery rhyme, pee your pants, and they all may make them dismount, but they still aren't escapes in the practical sense of a martial arts technique. pain compliance is useful and may or may not get the desired result.

comment When training for more than 90 minutes is it advisable to take a break to recuperate?
I was interested in this, just through my casual googling (ie, I'm an expert now!), it seems this might come about through drinking a bunch of water through the 90 minutes to lower your sodium content. It seems more dependent on how fast you drink bulk amounts of water than the total quantity. Also its unlikely to damage your organs in that time unless you went really crazy with water, but it might account for some fatigue / exhaustion / mental exhaustion you feel. But overall unlikely to be factor unless you drink lots

comment What are the possible signs some has lost consciousness when being choked?
@AyaProgram From what he said, he mistook what the choke was and tried to counter it, which just made it tighter, and I think by that time he just didn't have any time left to tap before losing consciousness.

yeah, I'm better prepared for next time, and I think overall, I'll be looking for anything odd when doing a choke

comment What are good martial arts for aging bodies?
I was going to suggest the this, the ground stuff is not really that good, though Arnis guys won't say that, but if you marry it with jiujitsu, it makes for a great combo.

on ibprofen, don't take it regularly when training, it has the less than desirable effect of lessening the strength gains your body will get through repair

comment How do you take Notes on techniques you've learnt in class?
@Ephraim I just use them as mental jogs, often in BJJ you get a technique, then you get variation 1,2,3,4 ... often I find myself going, oh, I remember a few months ago we covered this situation and there was a variation to handle when my opponent does X while I'm trying to do Y.

@Ephraim whats your reasoning?

yeah, I find with BJJ I just find the quantity of techniques and the variations of each technique and transitions is just huge, and writing some of this down is proving reasonably useful, but I find I'm ending up with quite a big list of things that I'm not quite sure how I can better organise things.

comment What is the oldest documented Eastern Martial Art that is still practiced?
no its not :) whatever those in loin cloths practiced, isn't documented, so we can only assume what they did.... I'm interested in what has been documented and people actually still follow, as a system

comment What time requirement and certification does one need to become a Krav Maga instructor?
I actually think its pretty quick, its not quite like a normal martial art. The core basics are very very simple and I think the idea is you can teach these to people very quickly so they develop some useful skills in very little time. It's not meant to be fully comprehensive with lots of techniques. So the basic instructor is not to be confused with being a "black belt" in other arts.

we are really scraping questions out of the 'odd' barrel on this site.
