What characteristics should I look for in a sensei? I would say that a reputable dojo will not have any "hidden costs". All costs should be clearly labelled in either their web site or literature. |

Why are firearms not part of the martial arts world? Gun crime statistics should be available from either your local or global government statistics office: Crime statistics in the UK for example. |

Are championships against Aikido philosophy? Tomiki was a student of Kano (founder of Judo) and an academic. These two influences lead to him wanting to "rationalization" Aikido using kano's methods. |

Why do different shapes of bokken exist? @stslavik: ask the question about the "blood groove"... It is indeed an interesting one. |

Why do different shapes of bokken exist? @stslavik: Your point on grooves applies to all swords and not just the katana. One more urban myth bites the dust! |

How is a Kubotan used in self-defense? @KeithNicholas: You say that... Anything you carry in the UK with the specific aim to inflict harm on another is classed as an offensive weapon. So, a whiteboard marker, hair spray, a screw driver, etc, can all be considered offensive weapons under the right circumstances. You are justified in using "reasonable force" but that is not a precisely defined term. It can and does vary from individual to individual. I am unaware of any law in other countries but I would check with your local friendly law enforcement agencies before considering either owning a kubotan or learning how to use one. Is there one traditional way of tying your belt in aikido? As far as I know, it is the way we all do it. However, there is another way (bigger and tighter knot) that gets the belt to not undo itself during competition. Sadly, I cannot remember how to do it. |

What is the proper technique for holding a Century-style body shield for use in Taekwondo? And me thinking this was about a hoplon, scutum or a kite shield... |

What is Fudo Myo-o (concepts of mushin, fudoshin, and zanshin)? @stslavik: Your answer is pretty clear and gives me plenty to follow on through. Thank you. I was familiar with the zanshin part and somewhat with mushin (from mushin, mugamae) but was in the dark as to the rest and did not know the links. I do now ^_~ |
