How are joints affected in the long term by martial arts practice? Anecdotal evidence is not worth the paper it is printed on. |

How do you prepare for the stress of a real self-defense situation? Okay, could we stop with the comments now? This is seriously getting to the stage of rant/flame/argumentation for its own sake. Would you consider removing some comments, amalgamating several into one or writing them up as an answer instead? |

What are the purposes of martial arts forms? +1 Very nice answer. I would be interested in the references for the first footnote. |

Which martial arts focus on self defense? How can you train for self-defence if you have no desire to train in a competitive area? In my not so humble opinion, sport is one of the only safe ways to practice against full resistance. Of course, it cuts a lot from a fight -- there are rules! But what other training method can you get? I am not trying to be irritating, just genuinely curious. |

How do you prepare for the stress of a real self-defense situation? Another expression would be "mushin nugamae" (lit. no mind, no posture). |

Do ninja follow the bushido? +1. This could be migrated to history.stackexchange.com but I believe that it could be on topic here as well if we agreed on philosophy and history tags. |
