Watching should never be a problems. However, depending on the dojo/instructor insurance, instructors may have to ask someone who wants to train to get insured (thus pay a small fee) even if they only want to try it for a session or two.

+1. I would emphasis being relaxed as this puts more elasticity into impacts thus dissipating kinetic energy instead of absorbing it into the body. You breathe point is excellent since it forces one's body to relax.
