I am an identity management program director who still remembers being a programmer/engineer/web designer, and cannot stop doing technical stuff from time to time. Useful skills include C#, Java, Notes/Domino, and petting cats without getting scratched. And making muffins--especially pumpkin.

How can I judge the competency of a teacher? Someone who would need to ask this question would not be able to evaluate number 2. |

How can I judge the competency of a teacher? @JohnP I didn't say it was an absolute--I said it was a sign. And that is true. |

How to select the right Aikido dojo The whole not talking thing is a particular culture of some branches of aikido, and is no way indicative of quality either good or bad. Its just a cultural quirk. |

Why doesn't aikido have kicking techniques? Aikido, unless it has been diluted to a new age exercise program, remains a martial system. Like -good- karatedo, it is a martial art of counter-response. That is, we respond to attacks, perhaps by deascalating, or perhaps by a powerful throw (which to someone not trained in ukemi can be fatal), or perhaps with atemi, a joint lock, or some other nasty. But the aggression--the attacks--are there. The classic shihonage done to someone who doesn't know how to fall breaks their arm and their shoulder, then slams their head into the ground at high speed. I would call that a counter attack. |

How to select the right Aikido dojo Most of this is good advise. Especially: select a good instructor, based on how they treat their students, whether the students are joyful and confident, and there is a positive culture of learning. This is more important than what style of aikido, or even whether to choose aikido versus another art (unless you already know aikido is the art for you--if you aren't sure, pick an instructor, not a style or art). |

Aikido Forward Roll Reach long applies to males; different advice is needed for females, who have their center of mass lower. |
