This explains why they historically carried only sidearms or light weapons. The second is that medieval Europe had a culture of openly carrying knives, and a lot of their knives fit your criteria. (Especially basilards or bolluck daggers!)

But taking the question about the ideal knife seriously, letting aside all the legal stuff that is different across the world either way, that made me think further and further so that I ended up with more and more points coming to mind. I think I arrived at a pretty objective answer if we take this as a speculative, theoretical question.
Aug 19, 2022 at 16:10 | comment | added | Futilitarian | but perhaps this is naive. Perhaps the OP lives in a circumstance in which knife-fighting is a necessary skillset. Perhaps my attitudes are 'luxury attitudes'.
Aug 19, 2022 at 16:08 | comment | added | Futilitarian | First of all, even though the question has described knife-carrying as a necessity, I find the idea tragic. Otherwise, everything you say about the ideal knife makes sense, other than for the fact that it is perhaps not easily carried/concealed/drawn in a hurry. I know this is outside the bounds of the question, and your advice is justified, but I feel compelled somehow to advocate for a weapon such as an umbrella/walking stick which achieves range without (necessary) lethality. Ok. I'm squeamish. I'm just wary of the advice we give here. I'd like to think we can outsmart the knife mentality..
